What to do in Newark?

Are you ready for a fun-filled holiday?
Newark is definitely one of the best places to be if you are looking for an entertaining family day out or a quick weekend break. From historic sites to golf courses, great restaurants, wonderful markets and speciality shops, there are plenty of indoor and outdoor activities that you can do with your family and friends whilst visiting the beautiful market town of Newark.

Here’s what we recommend

Newark Castle Gardens
At the Newark Castle, you can relax and enjoy the peaceful garden areas, explore the castle’s dungeons and walls and enjoy the different events and tours that take place at the castle. The castle is a grade II listed historic site which was partly destroyed in 1646 at the end of the English Civil War.
Opening hours in December:

  • Wednesday 7, 14 and 21 – 10am to 2pm
  • Friday 2, 9, 16 and 23 – 10am to 2pm

Newark Showground
If you and your family love animals, then the Newark Showground is the perfect place to be and enjoy wonderful horse, cat, dog and Koi Carp shows which happen regularly at the venue. If you are a fan of antiques, fairs are also frequent at the Newark Showground.
The Nottinghamshire County Show will take place here on the 13th and the 14th of May 2017.

The Civil War Museum
Are you a fan of history and you enjoy exploring and finding out interesting facts from the past? Visit the Civil War Museum, situated at only two miles away from our guest house and attend great events that take place regularly. Catch the next one on the 2nd of December, from 7pm to 8pm, where the famous archaeologist and broadcaster Julian Richards will talk about his BBC show “Meet the Ancestors.”

Southwell Race Course
Enjoy an entertaining day out with your family regardless of the weather, at the Southwell Race Course! It is one of four courses in the UK to have an all-weather track and the only one with a fibre-sand surface, which means you can admire beautiful horse races at all times.

Within 10 to 30 miles from our lovely guest house you can also admire:

  • The Lincoln Cathedral and Castle
  • The Horological Institute
  • The Workhouse
  • The Belvoir Castle
  • The Southwell Minster
  • The Thorsby Hall
  • The Rufford Park
  • The Hardwick Hall
